fsys Digi-Grove full stack Open-Source Model Server in the Real-World Lab for Digital Sovereignty
Digital independence and open solutions are essential, especially in non-profit work and international development cooperation. Our Mittwald vServer for our intercontinental educational game initiative on Regenerative, Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Food Systems has been serving for four years with a full range of self-hosted Open‑Source solutions for various project needs.
With project partners from city administrations, ministries, youth organizations and international research groups, we have been able to work collaboratively on our server, publicly document in real-time on our project websites, share results via an open cloud as a common good, switch to our own AI models and demonstrate the possibilities of digital independence as a practical case study in the ESD Real-World Lab.
On our Mittwald vServer we manage projects in independent environments, to which individual project teams have access with different permission levels.
With our managed vServer provider Mittwald in Germany we have found, in many respects, the ideal social tech and stack solution provider. The team is exceptionally committed in the increasingly complex topic of cloud infrastructure, consistently delivers solutions that match our daily practice as freelancers and agencies, and always provides fast, approachable and personal support. The carefully designed user experience in the server administration, the performance and the very good global accessibility are also fully met.
Since we work with project partners such as Alliance of Biodiversity International and Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research CGIAR in the field of agroecology and climate protection landscapes, the choice of server provider is also important to us from this perspective. Here too, Mittwald as a finalist in 2026 for the German Sustainability Award is an ideally suited solution provider for us.
Through the Bloom Sponsorship at Feldwerk Mittwald promotes biodiversity and creates living spaces alongside server spaces. For the Mittwald reforestation project, they planted a 27,158 m² agricultural area with native tree species in November 2021. Since then the „mittWald“ has been growing. Additionally, they acquired a 31,210 m² forest area at their location in Espelkamp to preserve the forest as a natural CO2 sink – something that connects us across borders with our project partners in Kenya, who have firmly integrated reforestation programs into school curricula and with whom we use our applications on the Mittwald server.
Thus our server host supports our fsysgame.org Full Stack Open Source vServer not only with open social technology, but also promotes, in accordance with our values, national climate goals as well as the preservation and protection of our regional ecosystems.
For the server costs, we currently rely on donations and want to finance the fsys server initially until the end of December 2026 with this campaign. The permanent, long-term financing is currently being calculated into an overall fsys financing plan.
fsysgame.org is a non-profit grassroots initiative and is managed by WE Aid gGmbH in Berlin with a non-profit structure. (Fiscal Host)
